Candle Chandler

What is a Candle Chandler?

A candle chandler is, a maker and seller of tallow, wax candles, and also usually soap. A chandlery was originally the office in a wealthy medieval household responsible for wax, candles and soaps as well as the room in which the candles were kept.

The head person of a chandlery would be the Chandler and was an important and trusted position. In many households it would be managed by the head of the kitchen, but in larger households, it would be a separate office under the leadership of the chandler.

Candle Chandler - History of the Name

The meaning of the word "chandler" comes from the Old French word "chandelier," which means "candlestick maker." Chandlers have been around for centuries, and their work has played an important role in human history.

  • The word "chandler" was first introduced to the UK in the late 14th century from the Norman word "chandeler" meaning candlemaker or a candlestick. The job title, Chandler, still exists as someone who works in the chandlery business or manages a chandler's shop. Interestingly, the more modern name of Chandelier used to be an ornate, branched ceiling light fixture holding many candles. Although the term is still widely used, nowadays Chandeliers are usually powered by electricity!
  • In the early days, candles were made from animal fat, such as tallow or lard. These candles were often smelly and smoky, and they didn't burn very well. However, they were the best option available at the time.
  • In the 18th century, beeswax candles became more popular. Beeswax candles were more expensive than tallow candles, but they were also cleaner and burned more evenly. Beeswax candles became a symbol of wealth and status, and they were often used in religious ceremonies.
  • In the 19th century, paraffin wax was invented. Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum, and it is much cheaper to produce than beeswax. Paraffin wax candles are also easier to make than beeswax candles, and they burn just as well. As a result, paraffin wax candles quickly became the most popular type of candle on the market.
