Natural Dye Workshops

While many UK workshops specialise in either wool (protein) or cotton (cellulose), TirGlas is known for its intensive 2-day workshops that cover both. Because animal and plant fibres require entirely different chemical preparations and mordants, learning both simultaneously from a tutor with 20+ years of experience (who has been featured in industry staples like The Knitter magazine) makes it a highly efficient masterclass for serious crafters.

  • Dedicated, purpose-designed Dye House.
  • Great on-site facilities; café, FREE parking and disabled access.

A lot of independent dyers host workshops in pop-up spaces, galleries, or community centres. We have a purpose-built Dye House in Cardiff Bay. This means we have the dedicated infrastructure to run heavy-duty, multi-day vats safely and consistently, which is a major draw for people traveling from outside of Wales to learn.

What should I expect on the day?

  • Natural dye workshops starts at 10.00am and finishes at 16.00pm.
  • Expert tuition in a professional in a purpose designed dye studio environment.
  • One Tutor and a maximum number of eight students.
  • 6 hours of guided tuition.
  • Guided tuition on the basic principles and practice of natural dyeing using, for example, madder, cutch, logwood and others.
  • After the theory part, the practical hands-on bit where you can hand dye yarn or cellulose fibres yourself.
  • The workshop includes all the necessary materials, including yarn, cellulose fibres and equipment.

You will take away from the Workshop a number of skeins of yarn or cellulose fibres that you have personally dyed. You will also have a printed file of information covering what you have learnt during the day.

What Workshops do you offer?

We offer a range of 1 and 2-day courses.

  • A one-day course introducing you to hand dyeing protein fibres – (animal fibres) wool, yak etc.
  • A one-day course introducing you to hand dyeing cellulose fibres – (plant-based fibres) cotton, linen, bamboo etc
  • A 2-day combined Protein and Cellulose fibres

No. All yarn and other fibres on this website and Workshops are dyed ONLY with natural dyes.

The Workshops are designed for complete beginners and also for those with a little or maybe 'lapsed' experience in natural dye.  As there is a maximum of four students to one Tutor on this workshop, tutoring can be tailored to each student to ensure that you get the best out of each workshop.

There maximum number depends on the workshop - 8 for Natural Dyeing unless there is a pre-booked group booking. Group bookings must be organised in advance prior to booking on-line.

All materials are provided - the courses include all the necessary materials, including yarn, cellulose fibres and equipment. A printed file to take home is part of the Workshop so you can go over the Workshop material at home.

There are café facilities on-site but you are welcome to bring your own packed lunch.

The Tutor

The tutor has over 20 years' experience with natural dyes. All the hand dyed yarn, scarves and other products on this website has been dyed by the Tutor.

She has recently been featured in the Knitter Magazine in the series on Artisan Yarn makers.
