Carthen or in its plural form, carthenni, is a Welsh word meaning a traditional Welsh blanket or a tapestry blanket.
Historically, Carthen translates into English as a woven coarse cloth. However, the word Carthen is used to describe double weave Welsh Blankets, and in particular blankets woven with colourful yarns and in geometric patterns. The most common Welsh blanket pattern is the Caernarfon Portcullis pattern although there are others such as the Dyffryn and Pennsylvania patterns.
All TirGlas Welsh blankets are woven at mills in Wales. Designed in Wales, many are woven in the Caernarfon portcullis pattern in the double weave tapestry style This style of weaving produces fully reversible blankets. None are mass produced.
